Scrapnotes

Scrapnotes are little bits of paper with a jotted thought about the thing that it's noting. Not enough to warrant a full notebook entry, still worth pointing out to people. It's sort of a link-dump come microblog. The date beside the publication is the publication date, the date at the bottom of entries is the date that I read it.

Obviously, this site is still a massive work in progress; I've added the tags below as place holders. At some point I want to make them interactive so you can click them and have it take you to a page with links to all the content tagged with that given tag, but I think I should focus on other things first, like... basic site layout.

What a lovely font. Wondering what I might be able to use it for...

The Joy of Incremental Website Improvements - jamesg.blog, 04-03-24

"My rule is: when time allows, and I'm feeling like I want to make something, I can go to my website."

Big mood. For me, this applies to writing TTRPG stuff, too, or knitting. There are a few different creative areas that I pick up when I can, rather than doing one thing over and over again until it's done. It's largely because of the way my brain is wired, I think; sometimes I loose motivation, but more often I get distracted and intensely focused on something else. Thankfully, progress in multiple areas is still progress, even if it's not progressing as far as if all that progress was focused in one area.

A Proper Cup of Tea downpour game by terry - 29-03-24

You should play this kick ass game about making a cup of tea. "How to make a proper cup of tea" normally fills British people with a sense of dread. There are opinions. You have to put your armour on. You must PREPARE FOR BATTLE. This game is very silly and takes all the mortal combat out of it.

It's made using Downpour, which seems like a really interesting bit of software that I want to try out, when I get give minues.

Quotation Marks and Direct Quotations - University of Sussex, 1997

General reminder of particular rules to keep myself sharp. Fair warning; the author uses an example quote from their book that seems at once a stunning description of systematic ableism and includes the r-slur. I went from being wryly amused at grammar things to gnawing on my desk, or wailing "Poor Chelsea, what happened to her?" Perhaps it was actually cunning ploy to try and get me to buy the book.

Amusing quotation at the end;

You may follow your own preference in this matter, so long as you are consistent. If you opt for logical punctuation, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are on the side of the angels, but you should also expect some grim opposition from the other side.

Ah yes, the unending Holy War of Grammar. It doesn't matter if you're understood. No, you must win.

Did one guy just stop a huge cyberattack? - New York Times, 03-04-24

Fascinating, terrifying, encouraging. The first two should be obvious, but encouraging because it illustrates our capacity for collective work when required; I think that's something that the existence of the internet as a whole demonstrates. The relative failure of sites like Twitter and Facebook to deliver on their supposedly utopian promises, shows that handing over a valuable commons like the internet to companies is a terrible idea.

Meet the Vietnamese grandmother fighting misinformation one youtube video at a time - The Markup, 16-11-23

It strikes me that a country's media that doesn't cater to whole populations of people because of a language barrier is essentially failing those people. It makes me wonder how things are in Wales; are there people who tend to only read or consume Welsh language media? Are there narratives that I'm missing out on by only consuming English language media?
